SCENE 1 - THE BALLROOM

George comes out of a lift looking around confused. The door to the ballroom comes open and inside we see the Elitists having a party.

Three Elitists have just realised that George isn't one of them. He is attacked and beaten up. Jeremiah comes over.

Two guards move forwards towards George. Steven enters, sees what is going one and rushed over.

Steven:

Freeman and Futura leave in a lift

Freeman sends Futura down to the workers to begin his plan

The machine room. Lake has Maria's "book" and looks to see if the coast is clear.

They leave, the workers are still chasing the robot

SCENE 4 THE WORKERS' ZONE

Tannoy Voice #2:
Control to all sections. The power is falling below the critical level. All sections return to the machines. We cannot guarantee your safety below 101.11. The pressure must be restored. Repeat, the pressure must be restored.

Marco:
Why did Maria give us hope? To keep us down on our knees?

2011:
Break the machines! Break them!

Groat:
What are you doing? Get back to work! You! Come 'ere!

Marco:
We've been tricked! You too Groat!

Groat:
Don't touch the machines.

Marco:

Groat:

Lake appears above, the robot has a knife to her throat.

A Worker runs in panicking

Steve arrives by lift, George arrives on foot.

Steven:
Maria, let the child go, Maria, and give me the knife.

Futura:

Futura:

The workers take hold of Steven, George climbs up towards Futura

George:
Give me the knife, Maria!

Futura plunges the knife into George laughing he falls back dead.

Groat:
She's not Maria. She's the devil! Let's burn the devil before she destroys us all!

Workers (Futura):
You know this girl is the devil (Children!)
She has to die if we're to survive (Children!)

Workers:
Let's watch this girl go to the devil
Into the fire, burn her alive

The Workers lift Futura and plunge her still laughing, into the furnace, Stefan is helpless to stop them. The workers draw back in awe. Maria's image has disappeared the metal shape of a robot appears. The workers are frozen in horror. Maria enters and sees the carnage.

Steven:
We all must go up to the city I know a place that we could hide together.

Groat:

Worker two:
To hell with them. To the lifts!

Groat:
You can't use the lifts. The guards will shoot you on sight.

Steven:
But we'll be dead if we stay here. Everyone try to get to level 10 and we'll join you there.

Tannoy Voice
Warning to all workers, warning to all workers. The air filters are no-longer functioning, the oxygen supply has been exhaused. Warning to all workers. The atmosphere in the machine rooms can no longer support life.

Requiem

Workers:
Day after day we worked on these machines

SCENE 5 FREEMAN'S OFFICE

Freeman:
What has happened? Where is Futura?

Jeremiah:
Futura went out of control. She killed Steven.

Freeman:
Killed Steven? Where is Futura?

Jeremiah:
The workers burned her in the furnace. Now that Steven is dead I will always be loyal. I will serve you all my life.

Metropolis

Freeman:

Freeman breaks down. Metropolis explodes and is destroyed. Steven, Maria, the children and the survivors appear from below one by one from a manhole in the centre of the stage. It is snowing and the children catch it in their hands in wonder.
